A showdown between Sonny and FBI Agent John “Jagger” Cates ended with only one of the angry Alphas walking away. Sonny unloaded one bullet into Jagger, and for good measure, he followed up with one more shot while Cates lay on the ground. Two days after these scenes aired on General Hospital, the actor who played Cates bid the soap world goodbye.
Goodbye, Agent Cates
Cates’s reckoning came sooner than expected, but many fans wondered if the goodbye would be permanent. It became official when Adam J. Harrington posted a touching goodbye on X, Formerly Twitter. That’s when fans opened up their minds to the possibility that Cates was truly gone.
In his message, Harrington wrote, “Well @GeneralHospital, it was a BLAST, literally!” The actor known for The Secret Circle, Bosch, and Supernatural then said, “To @valentinifrank, producers and writers. Thank you for the SHOT at joining your world. I loved it.” Harrington subsequently and jokingly continued using gun puns. “To the phenomenal cast and crew. It was an honor to witness the CALIBER of your work. Now, seriously, I will miss you all.”
Harrington also wrote a follow-up post directly to the people who love and watch GH on a daily basis: “To the @GeneralHospital viewers and fans, it’s been an honor being in your world and feeling your passion. To those who have written a goodbye, I’ve read every word, and I’m deeply humbled. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Until we meet again… Adam.”
Lydia Look (Selina Wu) replied to one of Harrington’s messages, saying, “I’m so grateful that we were able to share a small scene on set. I think the world of you and can’t wait to see you on set again. Wherever & whenever soon.”
Cates arrived in Port Charles in February of this year. At first, he posed a viable obstacle to Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) when he turned out to be a returned Jagger Cates. The two had history going back to the ’90s when the character was then played by Antonio Sabato Jr. Unfortunately, Cates and his lingering resentment and hatred for Sonny took over his life.
This move did disappoint viewers, especially those who thought Cates had the potential to be more than his hatred and vendetta. While he did connect with Ava (Maura West), that dynamic lasted about two seconds before he sent her away with his hitwoman/sidekick, arrested Kristina (Kate Mansi) for manslaughter, and further leveraged Sonny for the mother of all confessions that never happened.
Soap Hub wishes Adam J. Harrington the best, and we’re eager to see what he does next.
