General Hospital’s Selina Wu is a fearless mob boss with a sultry voice and aptitude for getting people to do what she wants – or else. Lydia Look, who’s portrayed the character since 2015, is an award-winning actress and writer.
Born in Singapore, Look’s most notable achievements were co-writing The Disney Channel original movie Wendy Wu: Homecoming Warrior and playing Ning in 7 Letters, Singapore’s 88th Academy Award Foreign Film entry in 2015. And she was also nominated for an M1 Theatre Life Award for her role as Agatha Mao in Checkpoint Theatre’s The Way We Go.
Want to learn more about the actress? Here are seven things to know about Lydia Look.
1. Look credits her mother, a wannabe actress who instead became a nurse and worked at Tan Tock Seng Hospital for 55 years, with getting her career started. “She pushed me to do acting since I was young and put me in the right schools, too. I went to Katong Convent, which was known for its Speech and Drama program,” Look told THG. (NOTE: it’s the homeground.asia website)
2. She thrived at the school, where she was nurtured by the nuns in all things Shakespeare and dubbed “the girl with the gift of gab.” She went on to study at Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London, where she graduated with an Associate degree in Speech and Drama.
3. According to IMDB, her nickname is “chilli padi.” It’s a bird’s eye chili that’s known for being super spicy.
4. Look speaks five languages, Cantonese, Chinese, Mandarin, Taiwanese, and Singlish, according to her resume. If you include standard English, it’s six.
5. Her fabulous sultry voice has made Look a natural as an audio books narrator. Among them: Rich People’s Problems, Sex and Vanity, China Rich Girlfriend, and Happy Endings.
6. Lydia originally auditioned to play a doctor on General Hospital. Although not the right fit for the part, casting director Mark Teschner later called her back to play tough-as-nails mob boss Selina Wu. It started out as an under-five gig, but slowly began to grow over the years.
7. Look has been happily married to actor/stuntman Jen Kuo Sung since 2005. She dubbed him “My North Star and Rock of Gibraltar” in a January 2023 Instagram post. Check it out @thelydia_look.
