More Massive Changes Are Coming To The Daytime Emmys 2020

There are changes coming to next year’s Daytime Emmys. While there are no plans to return the awards show fully to television, the National Academy Of Television Arts & Sciences has announced numerous changes to the festivities.

A Brand-New Daytime Emmys

On the topic of broadcasting the awards, Adam Chase, President, NATAS, tells Soaps.com, “Let me first clear up a misconception: The cost and NATAS’s nonprofit status are not the relevant part here. If broadcast, those costs are picked up by the networks.

“The Oscars, Golden Globes, Primetime Emmys, Grammys, and other major award shows are televised not because the respective academies choose to broadcast them, but rather because networks have sought to license and produce the events — footing those bills in the process.”

In a follow-up tweet via the Daytime Emmy’s official account, NATAS said: “…[L]ike many other fans, [we] want to see the great talents of our community honored on every platform. We expect to see parts of the 2020 #DaytimeEmmys ceremonies delivered to television screens, and will share more information in the months ahead. Stay tuned!”

Changes to the 2020 Daytime Emmys include: Broadcast serials (e.g., The Young and the Restless, General Hospital) will now compete with Web serials (e.g., After Forever, The Bay) in the following categories: Outstanding Art Direction/Set Direction/Scenic Design; Outstanding Casting; Outstanding Costume Design; Outstanding Lighting Direction; Outstanding Multiple Camera Editing; and Outstanding Music Direction and Composition.

Taking a page from the Primetime Emmys, in which performer Asia Kate Dillon (Billions), who identifies as non-binary, opted to compete in the Supporting Actor category, daytime performers can now submit in the acting category that they feel best represents their gender.

In the past, certain Creative Arts submissions have included special event shows. Now, Outstanding Makeup, Outstanding Costumes, and Outstanding Hairstyle submissions will include everyday efforts. Programs can also compete in the newly-created category of Outstanding Special Effects Costumes, Makeup, and Hairstyling.

New Judging Rules

The Individual Achievement in Animation category, along with the following Drama categories, will be judged by Television Academy and NATAS members only: Drama Series, Lead Actress, Lead Actor, Supporting Actress, Supporting Actor, Younger Performer, Guest Performer, Directing Team, Writing Team, Casting (also CSA members), Art Direction/Set Decoration/Scenic Design, Lighting Direction, Technical Team, Multiple Camera Editing, Live and Direct to Tape Sound Mixing, Music Direction and Composition, Costume Design, Hairstyling, and Makeup.

Also, as previously reported, the categories of Outstanding Younger Leading Actor and Outstanding Younger Leading Actress, which began in 1985 under different names, will be combined into one genderless category. The 47th Annual Daytime Emmys are set to take place late next spring on three nights Friday, June 12, Saturday, June 13, and Sunday, June 14.
