Back in 2014, the famous (infamous?) Ice Bucket Challenge went viral on social media to raise awareness of ALS, and now General Hospital star Maurice Benard is taking part in another challenge initiated to bring awareness to the deadly disease… but this time it’s to take a pie to the face!
The handsome actor posted his shirtless video from the shower in his home, prepared to make a mess for the good of helping people to become aware of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as ALS. While he didn’t look anxious to do it, he felt compelled.
He captioned the video saying, “I have seen the effects of ALS and it is downright devastating. I challenge all the actors @generalhospitalabc 2 take a pie in the face 4 ALS Especially @1steveburton @ingorademacher #alschallenge @clark95010 #87dc @49ers”
Benard went on to explain in the video that he was doing this for his friend, former football wide receiver Dwight Clark, who was diagnosed with ALS on March 19, 2017, and eventually succumbed to the debilitating disease on June 4, 2018.
The daytime community has also lost one of their own to the horrible disease. Back in 1998, One Life to Live and Guiding Light icon, Michael Zaslow, who played David Rinaldi and Roger Thorpe, respectively, passed away from ALS and dedicated the later part of his life to improving awareness with his charity, Zaz Angels.
You can watch Maurice Benard take a pie to the face below. Soap Hub will keep an eye out for those actors he’s challenged and also for others who simply want to join in and help out.
General Hospital (GH) airs weekdays on ABC. Check your local listings for airtimes.
