It’s Time to Resurrect General Hospital’s Sonny, Here’s Why and How

It’s been months since General Hospital’s Sonny plunged to his “death” on a New Jersey footbridge and emerged as an amnesiac bar worker named Mike on General Hospital. While the laid-back version of the Port Charles mob boss has been fun to watch, it’s time to resurrect the real Sonny. Here’s why and how.

General Hospital Commentary: Totally Isolated

Watching “Mike” flirt with Nina (Cynthia Watros), bond with Phyllis (Joyce Guy) and Lenny (Rif Hutton), and butt heads with Elijah (Dan White) has been entertaining. It’s a new side of actor Maurice Benard, and he’s been playing it to the hilt.

However, his best scene partners remain in Port Charles. Nothing can top Sonny’s relationships with Carly (Laura Wright), Jason (Steve Burton), and his sons Dante (Dominic Zamprogna) and Michael (Chad Duell). There’s history there that can’t and shouldn’t be denied. It’s time to stop isolating Sonny from the foursome to whom he’s so deeply connected.

Saving Port Charles

Relationships aside, Sonny’s presence is desperately needed back home. All hell is breaking loose with Cyrus (Jeff Kober) and Peter (Wes Ramsey) running amok, and Jason’s hands are virtually tied, having been framed for murder. Carly and Britt (Kelly Thiebaud) have teamed up to try and right things, but, let’s face it, they’re out of their league trying to compete with the two criminal masterminds.

Bringing Sonny into the mix would immediately level the playing field. He could collaborate with Jason to restore order, at the very least, and take back control of Port Charles, at the very best.

But How?

It doesn’t look like Nina’s going to do the right thing and bring Sonny back to his family any time soon. And Jax’s (Ingo Rademacher) fuzzy memory of seeing his nemesis alive, after getting shot, is slowly fading. So how should Sonny realize who he is, return home, and begin the process of reclaiming his life?

Instead of having another PC citizen accidentally stumble upon “Mike,” how about letting the shady Elijah solve the mystery of his true identity? With “Mike” messing with his life in Nixon Falls and accusing him of being corrupt, Elijah has begun looking into his past. How perfect would it be for him to uncover who “Mike” really is, turn the tables on him, and reveal him as major mob boss Sonny Corinthos?

Not only would it pave the way for “Mike” to return to his roots as Sonny, but it would also make Elijah realize he should have left well enough alone. After all, he’d suddenly find himself dealing with a far more formidable opponent than the mild-mannered “Mike.” General Hospital (GH) airs weekdays on ABC. Check your local listings for airtimes.
