Try to imagine, if you will, the goings on in Port Charles without mafia kingpin Sonny Corinthos on General Hospital (GH).
Actor Maurice Benard, who joined the soap in 1993, has been playing the pivotal role of Sonny for over two decades and won the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series Daytime Emmy Award for his efforts in 2003.
During his tenure with the soap, Sonny emerged from a peripheral bad guy to a leading man, the town’s top crime lord and head of the Corinthos family. So what would happen if the character suddenly vanished from Port Charles?
Over 4,500 fans responded when Soap Hub asked if the daytime drama would be the same if Sonny suddenly skipped town (which he did once before, leaving Brenda standing at the alter).
No, He’s the King of PC
Life without the dimpled Port Charles mobster is unimaginable to 95% of GH fans. You feel Sonny is an integral part of the PC fabric.
His presence is key, not only as the leader of the Corinthos family, but also as an adversary for Julian (William DeVry) and his lethal sister, Ava (Maura West). Plus, he’s a stabilizing factor in Jason and Sam’s lives. Without Sonny, the soap would have a huge void.
Yes, His Top Dog Days Are Done
Some 5% of you see Sonny’s days as the PC mob kingpin of as over. Yes, he’s still an interesting and beloved character, and you enjoy his complex relationship with Carly (Laura Wright) and his children.
However, if he left town, you could see someone else picking up the slack. Jason or even Carly could easily slip in to rule his “coffee” empire, while Jason would aptly take over as father figure to Sonny’s kids.
