The General Hospital characters of T.J., Willow, and Trina don’t often interact with one another, but their respective portrayers, Tajh Bellow, Katelyn MacMullen, and Sydney Mikayla, are all joined together as they compete in the Outstanding Younger Performer in a Drama Series at tonight’s Daytime Emmys!
Katelyn MacMullen, Sydney Mikayla, and Tajh Bellow Catch Up
Honoring younger performers on soaps at the Daytime Emmys started in 1985. Last year, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences combined the awards for younger actors and younger actresses into one category. The three GH actors are up against The Young and the Restless’s Alyvia Alyn Lind (ex-Faith) and Victoria Konefal (Ciara, Days of our Lives).
Soap Hub chatted with Bellow, MacMullen, and Mikayla at a studio in Burbank where they and other nominees gathered to pre-tape portions of the Daytime Emmy Awards.
Soap Hub: Okay. Before I forget the most important question…who are you all wearing?
Tajh Bellow: Kenneth Cole
Katelyn MacMullen: Alexander Wang
Sydney Mikayla: Pol’ Atteu
What is on your respective reels?
Bellow: My reel has two of T.J.’s stories. One finishes and one is beginning. There’s my proposal to Molly [Haley Pullos] that was being built for quite a while. But she doesn’t want to marry T.J. Even though she loves him, she doesn’t believe in traditional marriage. There’s also a scene with Aunt Stella [Vernee Watson] where I’m unpacking my trauma over having been kidnapped.
MacMullen: Willow finds out the truth about her baby [being dead]. Also, Willow walks in on Chase [Josh Swickard] and Sasha [Sofia Mattsson] having their fake affair. Then, there’s a scene with Willow and Elizabeth [Rebecca Herbst] at her baby’s grave.
Mikayla: Trina is dealing with the death of her father Taggert [Réal Andrews]. She tries to avenge his death, but that doesn’t end up happening. For a teenage girl, I think she’s doing her best! The last part of my reel includes scenes from the voting episode. Trina talks to Joss [Eden McCoy] about the importance of using your voice.
How does it feel that the category combines both actors and actresses?
Bellow: I‘m so honored to be the first male nominee in this category.
MacMullen: It really does make [being nominated] more of an honor because the talent pool is much larger. It feels surreal because there are so many talented people out there.
Mikayla: It makes it even tougher to make it to the top five!
The 48th Annual Daytime Emmys airs tonight, Friday, June 25 at 8 p.m. on CBS. The show also streams on Paramount+ and CBS.com General Hospital (GH) airs weekdays on ABC. Check your local listings for airtimes.
