Some fans were wondering why Robin Mattson didn’t reprise Heather Webber on General Hospital when the character recently resurfaced. As viewers have seen, the show tapped soap vet Alley Mills to take on the role. Now, Mattson is shining some light on why she might have not been available to reprise her part.
“As nice as is to be [missed] and so many of you have wondered what happened to me,” Mattson began an Instagram post. “I just want to let you know that I’ve been recovering from my knee surgery and today I’m going to have hip replacement surgery. Thank you all for your love and support! Looking forward to a fast recovery! Love Robin.”
Mattson closed her post with a heart emoji. Many supporters of the actress weighed in with encouraging posts, wishing her well. “Sending well wishes and love to you!” posted @bryananger. “You are divine Ms. Mattson. Simply divine. Daytime tv isn’t the same without you. Get well soon xxo.”
Another supporter, @parker.hairston, posted, “You are so incredibly amazing.. Get well soon and most importantly Thank you for giving your Fans an update.”
Robin Mattson was the third actress to take on the role of Heather. The role was originated by Georganne LaPiere (who is the real-life sister of Cher); then, Mary O’Brien took over the part from 1977-79. During O’Brien’s tenure, Heather attempted to drug Diana Taylor (Brooke Bundy) with LSD so that Heather could win back custody of her son Steven Lars (AKA P.J. Taylor) whom Diana and her late husband Dr. Peter Taylor (Craig Huebing) had adopted. P.J. caused Heather and Diana’s drinks to be swapped, resulting in Heather drinking the drug-laced drink.
When Heather was reintroduced to the scene the following year, Mattson was playing the part. Her ex-husband, Dr. Jeff Webber (then, Richard Dean Anderson; now, William Moses) took Steven Lars and moved west to get away from Heather. Mattson exited GH in 1983 to be near her son. She returned in 2004 to reprise Heather and played the part for about six months. She came back to the show again in 2012.
