General Hospital thrust Kelly Thiebaud and her character Britt Westbourne into a “love on the run” storyline earlier this year when Britt and a wounded Jason Morgan, wanted by the Port Charles police, took off. Now, Jason’s been forced to call off their developing relationship so he can deal with some family mob business.
Soap Hub caught up with Thiebaud at the Daytime Emmys last month where she chatted about the Britt/Jason pairing. “I worked briefly with Steve [Burton, Jason] three years ago but we hadn’t really crossed paths in the studio [since],” Thiebaud says. “I obviously know him because he’s Steve Burton! But I didn’t really know him.”
While Britt’s heart is broken, thanks to Jason needing to marry Carly (Laura Wright), Thiebaud is over the moon having gotten to work with the GH veteran. “I love him so much. What a genuine, funny, kind, and supportive person,” she says. “I feel so lucky to work with him. I’m really excited that this chemistry came out of nowhere.”
Kelly Thiebaud has been in the soap genre long enough to know that each pairing has devoted fanbases. “It’s a mixed bag, which is to be expected,” the actress says of the reaction Jason and Britt have received. “I get the ‘JaSam’ fans are diehards.” However, there are plenty of Jason and Britt fans, too. “People are loving us together,” Thiebaud observes. “I know it’s hard for people to embrace change. [Some] may not like what’s going on but there may be a part of them that is also interested.”
Britt was devastated by Jason telling her he was going to wed Carly Corinthos. Thiebaud’s performances earned her Soap Hub Performer of the Week for GH honors. Now that viewers have never seen Britt be so vulnerable, is it possible she’ll lose “the Britch” nickname?
“We’re seeing this whole other side to her,” notes the actress, who hastens to add, “I don’t think she’ll ever [lose being called ‘the Britch’]. The writers have definitely shown this more vulnerable side to her. She still has that edge where she says it like it is. I don’t think that’s ever going away.”
The show’s scribes crafted a nice scene in which Britt shared her feelings about Jason with her mother Liesl Obrecht (Kathleen Gati). “She’s fantastic,” raves Thiebaud of the dynamic Gati. “My [real-life] mother would never ask me [what Liesl asked Britt] but ‘Mutter’ will say anything!”
What made losing Jason (for now?) all the more heartbreaking is that he helped her look at life differently after she addressed Huntington’s disease, a genetic condition she’s inherited from her late father Faison (Anders Hove). “It’s been rewarding and challenging and sad and eye-opening,” Thiebaud notes. “I’ve personally learned to change my outlook on life [because of what Britt is going through]. This disease is so terrible and it happens to a lot of people.”
Kelly Thiebaud has come and gone from Port Charles since debuting as Britt but she wants viewers to know she loves being on GH. “I’m really happy to be back and to have been given this meaty storyline where I can explore, be creative, and challenge myself,” she says.
