Already a Daytime Emmy winner for her role as Karen Blackwell on the digital drama The Bay, actress Carolyn Hennesy is competing for gold again this year in the category of Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her role as the dynamic Diane Miller on General Hospital.
Soap Hub recently caught up with Hennesy, dressed in a beautiful Pol’ Atteu gown, at the taping of the Daytime Emmys at a studio in Burbank. We chatted with the star about her nomination, what scenes are on her reel, and more.
Soap Hub: Congratulations on your nomination!
Carolyn Hennesy: I was so surprised when I saw my name.
I wasn’t!
You could have knocked me over with a feather.
What’s on your reel?
The scenes that I believe got the most attention were the Alexis [Nancy Lee Grahn] intervention scenes in Sam’s [Kelly Monaco] apartment. Alexis knows she’s been ambushed and she is not there willingly. Diane asks to go first. She cannot speak extemporaneously as she could in court because her best friend’s life is on the line.
She actually has to unfold this paper and look down and she still gets verklempt. Diane became incredibly emotional. She realizes that Alexis could be gone the next time she gets into a car drunk. She has this problem and she’s not looking at it. Diane is fighting for Alexis’s life more than Alexis is.
It was a personal situation but did Diane tap into her skills as a lawyer to “make her case” as it were?
Diane doesn’t have a tremendous number of close friends. So, when her best friend is committing slow suicide, there’s a ferocity that Diane wants to bring out but she knows it will absolutely backfire. I have friends in life going through situations. Some are similar to Alexis’s situation and some are not similar. I’ve actually orchestrated interventions. The odds are that they will go well are very slim.
Sometimes, we see a lot of lead performers who have chosen to enter in supporting categories for various reasons. Diane is a true supporting character, so you being in this category makes sense.
I could not agree with you more.
The Outstanding Lead Actresses get together for a luncheon. Should the Supporting Actresses start a similar tradition?
I didn’t know that. I’ve got Tamara’s [Braun, Kim, Days of our Lives] number and Briana’s [Nicole Henry, Jordan]. That’s three out of five! I’ll figure it out!
The 48th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards air on June 25 at 8 p.m. on CBS and stream on Paramount+ and CBS.com. General Hospital (GH) airs weekdays on ABC. Check your local listings for airtimes.
