Today was the first time we saw General Hospital (GH) scenes between Kelly Monaco and Steve Burton in five years where they actually had more than two lines of dialogue together and it brought so much flooding back.
While we can’t deny the palpable chemistry between Monaco and Billy Miller as the man who has called himself Jason Morgan for two years, we also can’t deny the palpable chemistry between Monaco and Steve Burton, the man who called himself Jason Morgan for nearly 20 years.
So, what’s a GH fan to do? Well, for starters, we can just enjoy what we saw today, no matter how brief before an “interruption.” Like Burton’s scenes last week with Maurice Benard and on Wednesday with Laura Wright, these just felt right. It seemed like no time had passed at all, despite half a decade passing.
It reminded us what we’ve been missing, but also reminded us there’s another Jason we’ve grown to love and who Sam’s grown to love and he is right there waiting for her–making our choice as hard as Sam’s.
Now, clearly only one of these men is the Jason that Sam first fell in love with, but will that matter if it turns out she fell in love with both of them but on different levels?
Sam has a life of security and (relative safety) with her Current Jason, but she built that while thinking he was her Original Jason.
Perhaps the man who looks like her Original Jason is a man she never met before, but it might be ages until we know for sure. (Although it sure looks like Franco knows.) Maybe her new life is what Sam wants and if the man she built it with is Jason’s twin, then so be it.
But again, what we saw today will make things hard and heartbreaking on everyone involved. And maybe this story will prove that you can give someone new memories, but you can’t change who they are inside. To Sam, that might make all the difference in the world.
General Hospital (GH) airs weekdays on ABC. Check your local listings for airtimes.
