Things started out so rosy for “General Hospital’s” Julexis at the start of the year. They moved into a new home, were planning their wedding, and did finally marry in February. Then, it all went downhill from there.
Julian seemed to think he was only re-entering the mob temporarily to help out his sister, Ava (Maura West), but when Carlos Rivera returned to town as the one man who could pin him for Duke’s murder, Julian reverted back to form. Gone was the reformed mobster who left a life of crime for the sake of Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn) and his family.
Instead, we saw a desperate man willing to do anything to keep his new marriage together–even if that included ordering hits and committing murder with his own hands. The episode in which Julian killed Carlos (which re-aired in some ABC markets today) with the dagger Helena used to kill Alexis’s mother sent fans into a tailspin.
However, actor William deVry has taken it all in stride. While many fans see his character as written into a corner, he sees the story as an opportunity to get fans immersed in the story, whether happy or angry.
“It’s a TV show,” deVry said in the June 20 issue of Soap Opera Digest. “If people are yelling at their TV and throwing things at certain characters, well, we’re doing our jobs. Our job is to get a reaction and the stronger the reaction we can garner, the better.”
The actor reminded fans that killing and criminal activity are at the core of Julian, as it was how he was raised. He also pointed out that there are two decades of Julian’s life the audience never saw, and that can explain many of his actions.
He also admitted that fan reaction has softened in the weeks since Julian pushed that dagger into Carlos.
“As the story goes on, I am kind of seeing people go ‘This is really super interesting. I’m still pissed that they ruined Julexis but you guys are on fire.’ It’s almost like going by a car accident. You just can’t help but look.”
