Life in Port Charles wasn’t easy on Neil during his General Hospital run, especially since he ended up murdered by Harmony, but in real life, Joe Flanigan is busy celebrating a very special milestone.

Happy Birthday, Joe Flanigan

That’s because he was born on January 5, 1967, in Los Angeles, California, which means that this talented actor is turning 57 years old today. After graduating from college, Flanigan took a number of jobs, including bartending, working as an advance man for the George Bush administration, and writing articles for prestigious New York magazines.

On the advice of his friends, Flanigan tried his hand at acting and eventually studied under Gerald Gordon (himself a GH alum as Dr. Mark Dante), who taught classes at the New York City-based Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre. In 1994, he headed west for California and landed his first on-camera role in the made-for-television film Family Album.

Subsequent gigs included Deadline for Murder, A Reason to Believe, and Tell Me No More Secrets. Flanigan also had a substantial number of recurring roles on some of the biggest primetime series of the 1990s and early 2000s. Chief among them were Sisters, Providence, and Profiler.

In 2002, he was selected to be one of the main characters in the television series First Monday, and two years later, he was cast in another program that would earn him legions of fans — Stargate: Atlantis.

Flanigan stayed with Atlantis for its entire 100-episode duration — two of which he personally wrote — and afterward, he made guest appearances on Warehouse 13, Fringe, Metal Hurlant Chronicles, and Major Crimes. In February 2019, Flanigan joined the cast of General Hospital, and he recurred as Dr. Neil Byrne until the character’s untimely demise (so the actor could go to Canada for another role).
