General Hospital Wins The Writers Guild Award For Best Daytime Drama!

General Hospital made history at the Writers Guild of America Awards. On Sunday night, the ABC soap won the award for best Daytime Drama for the fifth year in a row, a feat that’s never been accomplished!

The awards were handed out in dual ceremonies in Beverly Hills and New York City. On the west coast, comedienne Sarah Silverman presented in the soap category. While she might seem like an odd choice to present an honor to soaps, Silverman said in her remarks that she’s a fan of both nominated shows!

“Whether you love Bo and Hope, Luke and Laura or Scorpio, whom we named our dog after,” Silverman said, “The winner is, and you’re both winners, but it’s the writers of General Hospital!”

GH writers Elizabeth Korte and Donny Sheldon were on hand to accept the award. As the pair made their way to the stage, Silverman said, “Keep clapping! They’re not here yet!”

Speaking on behalf of GH head writers Shelly Altman and Chris Van Etten, Korte gave thanks many, starting with the Writers Guild of America.

“It’s really wonderful that you continue to support daytime,” Korte said. “We’re so grateful to you not just for the health insurance but for acknowledging us, period! It’s very, very, very appreciated! Thanks to the staff, cast, directors, and crew of GH.

“Thanks to our amazing executive producer, Frank Valentini,” Korte continued. “Thanks to [programming executives] Sarah Murphy-Katz, Nathan Varni, and Bill Burton at ABC.”

To win this year’s honor, GH submitted scripts featuring the storyline of Mike’s (Max Gail) Alzheimer’s.

The other nominated series this year was Days of Our Lives, which submitted scripts related to J.J. (Casey Moss), his depression, and his suicidal thoughts.
