Our General Hospital Take: Nancy Lee Grahn Brought Down the House

For more than 30 years, actress Nancy Lee Grahn has blown daytime audiences away with her quick and biting humor, her tenderness when necessary, and her powerhouse performances when her characters become enraged.

We loved everything she did during her years as attorney Julia Wainwright on “Santa Barbara” and sometimes we forget how she carried that gift over to “General Hospital” and Port Charles.

After all, Grahn has played Alexis for so long that she’s given us the gamut of every emotion possible. But, she’s always played her with strength and integrity. Today, when Alexis knew her integrity–and her trust–had been compromised in the worst way, Grahn reminded us what she does so well.

We sat on the edge of our seats with our hearts pounding out of our chests as Alexis gave it to Julian (William deVry) with everything she had. Her rage was palpable and we raged with her, but we also cried with her as we watched her silent resignation, shock, and disbelief as her new husband explained away his murderous actions as if they were nothing. All for the family he said in a callous manner, showing what a true sociopath Julian really is.

It was easy to see Alexis wanted out of this as fast as she could, nearly welcoming Sonny’s (Maurice Benard) knock at the door. She knows Julian has both tricked her and trapped her and she feels sick for letting it happen. Just like us, she wanted to believe Julian had changed, but it was clear he hadn’t. He’s still everything she said she could never be with, but now she’s married to him, an accomplice to murder, and woman who just wants OUT.

Grahn conveyed every emotion Alexis felt today so we could feel them, too. And, that’s what an Emmy-winning actress is all about.
