Vanessa Marcil, beloved as Brenda Barrett on General Hospital, has suffered a deep, personal loss. She took to social media to express her feelings and let her followers know that a dear loved one has died.
“My big brother Pete Samuel Ortiz Jr died last night. Rest in power Sammy…..” Marcil shared on her Instagram account.
The actress’ former GH co-star Rena Sofer (ex-Lois; now, Quinn, The Bold and the Beautiful) posted words of support on Marcil’s post. “Oh Vanessa,” Sofer wrote. “It’s been a tough year for you. I’m so sorry for your loss.”
Earlier this year, Marcil mourned the loss of her friend, Suzanne Whang, host of House Hunters, who passed away from breast cancer. Marcil and Ortiz’ father, Pete Ortiz, Sr., passed away on September 14, 2017.
The Emmy-winning actress is the youngest of four children. In addition to her late brother, her siblings include two older sisters, Tina and Sherry.
Marcil burst onto the soap scene in 1992 as Brenda, the half-sister of Julia Barrett (Crystal Carson), quickly becoming one of the show’s most popular stars. Marcil was paired with many leading men on the show, finding her greatest success with Maurice Benard (Sonny). But, many preferred her with Ingo Rademacher’s Jasper ‘Jax’ Jacks.
The actress last appeared on the show in 2013. In addition to her role as Brenda, Marcil has appeared on Beverly Hills 90210, Las Vegas, Lipstick Jungle, and Without A Trace.
Soap Hub joins Marcil’s fans in sending deep condolences to the actress and her family at this difficult time. General Hospital airs weekdays on ABC. Check your local listings for airtimes.
