Two-time Daytime Emmy-winner Maurice Benard is one of daytime TV’s most celebrated actors courtesy of his portrayal of Sonny on General Hospital. Now, he’s being honored for his being a book author.
The honorees for the 72nd Annual Christopher Awards, which honor books, films, and TV programs celebrating courage, faith, and hope, included Benard for his 2020 memoir Nothing General About It.
Created in 1949, The Christopher Awards honor those whose work “affirms the highest values of the human spirit” and reflects the Christopher motto: “It’s better to light one candle than to curse the darkness.”
“The stories we are honoring introduce us to people and experiences that may not be a part of our everyday lives,” said Tony Rossi, The Christophers’ Director of Communications. “Stories of refugees fleeing violence and persecution, for instance, or young caregivers devoting themselves to loved ones with dementia and other medical issues remind us how much we have in common even when the particulars of our lives differ.”
Last year, Benard chatted with Soap Hub Insiders to talk about his autobiography Nothing General About It. The tome documents Benard’s “lifelong battles with bipolar disorder and medications that helped him thrive, and his commitment to erasing the stigma around mental illness.”

As regular GH viewers know, Benard’s still playing Sonny, but Sonny doesn’t know that he’s “Sonny!” After falling off a bridge during a fatal showdown with Julian (William deVry), Sonny developed amnesia. He currently believes his name is Mike (which it technically is, he just goes by Sonny) and he’s working at a bar, The Tan-O, in Nixon Falls.
Recently, Nina (Cynthia Watros) came upon Sonny but is keeping his existence a secret. She tried to call Carly (Laura Wright), to tell her the miraculous news, but Carly cut her off before Nina could share her discovery. General Hospital (GH) airs weekdays on ABC.
