Maura West is a fan favorite and daytime legend in her own time. Her performances on more than one soap have riveted viewers. And, now, the General Hospital star is celebrating something amazing! Today, it’s the actress’ birthday, as she was born on April 27, 1972.
West first came onto the daytime scene in 1995 as duplicitous Carly Tenney on As The World Turns. She emerged as a lead heroine on the show not only walking away with two Daytime Emmys for Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series, but it’s also where she met her husband, Scott DeFreitas (ex-Andy).
The couple have five children, Benjamin (from West’s first marriage), Joseph Peter, Katherine Marie, Basil John, and Birdie West. DeFreitas popped the question to West in 1999 on a giant video screen at a New York Yankees game.
A native of Springfield, Massachusetts, West, born Maura Jo Snyder, went to Boston University’s School For The Arts, the same college that ATWT alumna Julianne Moore (ex-Frannie/ex-Sabrina) attended.
After ATWT came to an end in 2010, Y&R invited West to take over the role of Diane Jenkins. She played the part of Victor Newman’s (Eric Braeden) ex-wife for a year.
After Diane was killed off, GH reached out to West, inviting her to take on the newly- created role of Ava Jerome. In Port Charles, she’s been delivering performances that make viewers feel sorry for character and afraid of her at the same time.
West is currently the frontrunner among critics to take home another Emmy for playing Ava, having won her first for the role in 2015.
Soap Hub joins West’s family, friends, and fans in wishing the actress a happy birthday and many happy returns!
General Hospital airs weekdays on ABC. Check local listings for air times.
