Many fans knew that when Finola Hughes came to General Hospital as Anna Devane, she had already appeared in the feature film Stayin’ Alive, but musical fans knew that she had also played the White Cat in the musical Cats.
Recently, her TV daughter, Kimberly McCullough (ex-Robin), shared a photo of Hughes as the White Cat with words of praise for her talented TV mom. “Everyone… the legend that is my TV mother and original white cat… FINOLA HUGHES,” McCullough wrote. A fan asked if she had been in the show and McCullough reported that yes, Hughes had been in the original London cast.
Alas, the current feature film release is reportedly not performing well at the box office. Variety reports that Universal has decided to not proceed with a campaign to help Cats win any Oscar nominations.
The show might not walk away empty-handed come awards-season, however. Beautiful Ghosts, a song from the film by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Taylor Swift, was nominated for best original song at the Golden Globes.
In addition to Swift, Cats stars Judi Dench, Ian McKellen (X-Men), Jennifer Hudson (Dream Girls), Idris Elba (Luther), James Corden (The Late, Late Show with James Corden), Rebel Wilson (Super Fun Night), and Jason Derulo (Empire). Frankie Hayward (Romeo and Juliet: Beyond Words) plays the role of the White Cat in the film.
Reportedly, Cats earned $15.3 million in its first six days after being released and cost $100 million to make. One thing’s for sure. Hughes is a winner in not only McCullough’s eyes but also in the eyes of GH fans everywhere! General Hospital airs weekdays on ABC. Check local listings for air times.
