Couples come and go on soaps, but some will remain in the hearts of fans forever! Recently, General Hospital star Genie Francis was asked a question that viewers have been wondering for almost four years!
Francis, who plays Laura Webber Collins, took part in the recent General Hospital Convention event in which she did a QA with fans, answering many of their burning questions!
One viewer asked what was in the letter that Luke (Anthony Geary) gave Lulu (Emme Rylan) to deliver to Laura. Written on the envelope was the word “Angel,” which was Luke’s nickname for his ex-wife.
“I have no idea,” Francis earnestly replied. “I think probably [the letter was] letting her know that he always loved her and that was the thing that saved his life.”
As veteran GH fans recall, Laura truly did save Luke’s life when she took his car keys and threw them down a hill into the night, preventing him from executing a hit on newly-elected politician Mitch Williams (Chris Pennock). Had Luke gone ahead with the job, he likely would have been shot just as Roy DiLucca (then, Asher Brauner; later, A Martinez) was after he stepped in for Luke and took on the assignment.
“He’d have been dead if it weren’t for her,” theorizes Francis, adding the note may have included from her TV ex “a final [plea to] go and be happy and live your life.”
While the show’s writers have never fully revealed the contents of the letter, Francis’ speculation seems on the money.
Is the note still sealed? Perhaps, but, Francis says, “I think she’s probably opened that thing [by now].”
Geary exited GH in 2015, returning for a cameo two years later when Jane Elliot (Tracy) made her last appearance on the show. Luke and Laura’s wedding in 1981 remains daytime TV’s highest rated episode. General Hospital airs weekdays on ABC. Check local listings for air times.
