Now that we know the General Hospital serial killer is Paul Hornsby, it’s time to find out why. Of course, for now we’ll likely be theorizing why as we try to figure out this complicated character who seems to change like a chameleon with every new story.

It feels like Paul hasn’t had his own story since the character was re-introduced in the form of Richard Burgi last year. All we know for sure is that he’s not one of the good guys. Sometimes we like him, sometimes we hate him, sometimes he confuses us, and sometimes he confuses everyone–even the actor who plays him.

“I think I have always attempted to make Paul somewhat schizophrenic, different with different people,” actor Richard Burgi told Soap Opera Digest.

Indeed he is different with different people. He seems to truly have feelings for Anna (Finola Hughes) and truly love his son, Dillon (Robert Palmer Watkins). But, he’s also clearly diabolical on some level if he’s killed this many innocent people–including Kyle Sloane. While he claimed he killed Sloane due to what the cop did to his daughter, Susan, we have to wonder if Susan might somehow be his motive here as well. After all, Paul always says he will do anything for his children…

The writers admit the killer’s motive makes the story more interesting, and that he’s working on a time table. However, what started out as methodical killings seems to have evolved into murder (or attempted murder to cover his tracks).

Fans never expected Paul to be the culprit, and clearly neither did Burgi. He told Digest that Executive Producer Frank Valentini only told him of this new twist recently.

“I have no idea where this is going, if this is the Dead Man Walking part of Paul’s life [laughs]. All I know is that when I read it, it’s kind of fun!”
