General Hospital Recognizes Cassandra James and Transgender Day of Visibility

Soaps have always led the way in combining entertainment and education with storytelling. General Hospital incorporated a transgender character, Dr. Terry Randolph, played by Cassandra James, onto the ABC soap opera a few years ago.

Cassandra James Honored On Transgender Day of Visibility

Now, GH is recognizing International Transgender Day of Visibility, which was started by Rachel Crandall, a Michigan-based transgender activist in 2009, in some social media posts.

“Dr. Terry Randolph stands as a beacon of hope in Port Charles and, on this #TransDayOfVisibility, the entire cast and crew of #GH is honored to call @cassandrajames_ a member of our family,” read a tweet from GH’s official account.

“I continue to be deeply honored by #GeneralHospital and @ABCNetwork’s commitment to telling trans stories. Our visibility matters now, more than ever.” – @cassandrajames_ #TransDayOfVisibility #GH.

Terry was introduced to the GH canvas in 2018 as an oncologist, who treated Oscar (Garren Stitt), who was diagnosed with cancer. Viewers learned that Terry and Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst) were childhood best friends. The duo shared a kiss prior to Terry transitioning.

James was handed some heavy material as Terry gently informed Oscar that his diagnosis was terminal. Terry also treated Franco (Roger Howarth) for his brain tumor.

Soaps have introduced other transgender characters. On The Bold and the Beautiful, viewers learned that Maya Avant (Karla Mosley) was born Myron. She broke the news to her boyfriend Rick (Jacob Young), who took some time to process the news. Rick realized he loved Maya and the two were married.

Fans of James would like to see her see even more screen-time on GH with a story of her own. “I love her character Terry! Now give her a storyline.
