The General Hospital recap for Monday, May 25, 2020, features a look back to the spring of 2014 when the 20th anniversary of the Nurses Ball was celebrated by…having another Nurses Ball.
General Hospital Recap Highlights
The year 1994 seems like a lifetime ago. But that was the year the very first Nurses Ball was held. Its purpose was two-fold: money would be raised for the hospital’s AIDS Pediatric Unit and it’s AIDS Outreach Programs and the event would paint Damian Smith (the mobster who underwrote it) and Lucy Coe (who finagled hostess duties) in a positive light.
The program was a massive success – despite the slight hiccup of an underwear-clad Lucy being exposed to the crowd (thanks to Tony Jones and Damian) – and nearly $500 thousand dollars was raised. Subsequently, it became an annual gala – until it’s disbandment in 2002.
Context Is Key
If there’s one thing that the Nurses Ball became known for it was the drama that would inevitably ensue each year. There was almost always a fight between two warring parties and Lucy ALWAYS ended up onstage wearing only her underwear.
And the ball held in 2014 was shaping up to be no different. Lucy had just ended her extramarital affair with Scotty (Kin Shriner) and recommitted to Kevin (Jon Lindstrom), but she and gal pal Felicia (Kristina Wagner) worried that the truth would out – much like the truth about Sonny’s (Maurice Benard) crypt sex with Ava (Maura West)!
Meanwhile, Maxie (Kirsten Storms) found herself kept away from the festivities by her disapproving beau, Levi (Zachary Garred). Both Britt (Kelly Thiebaud) and Brad (Parry Shen) decided to skip the proceedings and watch the live coverage.
Making Their Presence Known
With the ball’s start time fast approaching, it was time for the Red Carpet arrivals. There was John McBain..no wait, it was aspiring vampire Caleb Morley…oh right, it was his twin, Dr. Silas Clay (Michael Easton). And Sam (Kelly Monaco) was on his arm. Then she was on the floor. EVERYBODY laughed at that one.
Other attendees included Tracy (Jane Elliot) and Luke (Tony Geary) – Port Charles’s favorite curmudgeon and one of its living legends – as well as Anna (Finola Hughes) and her sexy Scot Duke Lavery (Ian Buchanan).
Let’s Get The Party Started
With everybody seated and Lucy’s introduction out of the way, it was time for the GH nurses to shine. However, they were forced off the stage by a spotlight seeking Liesl (Kathleen Gati) who belted out Welcome from Cabaret. General Hospital airs weekdays on ABC.
