General Hospital Recap: The World Is A Better Place Thanks To The Dimpled Don

The General Hospital recap for Friday, April 24, 2020, features a throwback to a very special episode that posed the question — “What would the world be like if Sonny was a law-abiding citizen?” Spoiler alert: Not great!

General Hospital Recap Highlight

This soap has a reputation for being all about Sonny (Maurice Benard), all the time. So in order to not dissuade the audience of this notion, GH has used “Flashback Friday” to repeat a special, Sonny-centric riff on It’s A Wonderful Life that first aired way, way back in November of 2018.

Context Is Key

When Sonny was but a wee lad he proved his worth to surrogate father — and mob boss — Joe Scully by executing Vincent Marino. But now Vincent’s daughter Margaux (Elizabeth Hendrickson) is in town and she’s out for Sonny’s blood.

And for his part, Sonny is actually sorry he committed the crime. As he ruminates over his life choices, he enters a dream world where he never actually pulled the trigger and Mr. Marino went on his merry way.

Sonny Corinthos, This Is (Not) Your Life

Since there’s no Sonny Corinthos to protect it, Port Charles has devolved into a “smuggler’s paradise” ruled by the dreaded Jerome siblings. Police Commissioner Anna Devane wants to do right by her citizens. However, she’d rather deal with the devils she knows than force them out and contend with yet another turf war.

But Sergeant Michael “Sonny” Corinthos doesn’t take too kindly to her position — though he is sorry to hear about the death of her daughter. RIP Robin (Kimberly McCullough). Yes, it turns out that the only way that AIDS research was able to advance in the 1990s was because of Sonny’s dirty money.

Sonny also isn’t thrilled that Dante (Dominic Zamprogna) — the son he shares with wife, Olivia Falconeri (Lisa LoCicero) — has ingratiated himself into the Jerome’s business. Little does he know that Dante was planning a messy double-cross.

First, he conspired with DEA agent Jordan Ashford (Briana Nicole Henry) to have his bosses arrested. Then, he shot and wounded their enforcer Jason Smith (Steve Burton). But before he could finish the job, Sonny intervened…and wound up mortally wounding his son!

Sonny just can’t stop shooting Dante. Even in a dream world. If there was one thing that Sonny learned during his “dark night of the soul” it’s that the world, and especially Port Charles, is better for his decision to kill an innocent man. General Hospital airs weekdays on ABC. Check your local listings for airtimes.
