The General Hospital recap for Friday, May 1, 2020, features a throwback to a very special anniversary episode that saw AJ ascending to the upper-room, and Sonny reliving the past with three different versions of Carly.
General Hospital Recap Highlights
So much of this soap is predicated on the complicated (and we do mean COMPLICATED) love story of Sonny (Maurice Benard) and Carly (currently played by Laura Wright). It’s a relationship that has survived over two decades, numerous divorces, a plethora of near-death experiences, and several recasts.
Oh, and GH also loves (and we do mean LOVES) to kill off Quartermaines. So it’s no surprise that it took full advantage of “Flashback Friday” to repeat a special episode in which AJ went to heaven and Sonny and Carly re-examined their life choices.
Context Is Key
Thanks to Ava’s (Maura West) manipulations, AJ (Sean Kanan) is dead. And right before he passed, AJ was able to whisper the name of his assassin to ex-wife Carly – it was her ex-husband, Sonny!
Meanwhile, Lucy Coe (Lynn Herring) was given an ultimatum by her secret lover, Scotty Baldwin (Kin Shriner) — either choose a life with him or remain with her workaholic husband, Kevin (Jon Lindstrom).
Memory Lane
In hopes of convincing Carly not to tell the recently-awakened Michael (who had languished in a coma for months) of his “misdeed,” Sonny pulled her into the hospital’s chapel and initiated a stroll down memory lane.
They talked about their first meeting, their first sexual experience, and the child they lost (during which time Carly was played by Sarah Brown). Then they recalled the time that Tamara Braun’s Carly ratted him out to the FBI.
And they couldn’t forget how Laura Wright’s Carly recovered from a nervous breakdown or how Sonny manipulated her into yet another marriage. Good times!
Lucy: Decision Time
Though she took her time, Lucy eventually reached a decision. She was going to stay with “Doc” and make their marriage work – but she was keeping quiet about the affair. Scotty’s heart was broken, but at least he could commiserate with Bobbie (Jacklyn Zeman) who lost her boyfriend, Noah Drake (Rick Springfield), to Annie “The Virgin” Logan.
Heaven Bound
Finally, the spirit of Emily Quartermaine (Natalia Livingston) returned to offer a grieving Monica (Leslie Charleson) comfort and lead AJ to the pearly gates. General Hospital airs weekdays on ABC. Check your local listings for airtimes.
