When the COVID-19 pandemic shut down production in Hollywood more than two months ago, we knew the day would come when General Hospital and other soaps ran out of original episodes. That happened for the CBS soaps three weeks ago, but GH has been chugging along. Sadly, today marks the last new episode with your Port Charles pals until the soap can get back on the set.
GH managed to stretch out its episode count by adding flashbacks into already-completed shows telling us back story to the current stories taking place. While the flashbacks seemed a bit disjointed and not necessary to the story, they served their purpose and got us through most of May with new PC story.
As of today that comes to an end and it looks like the soap is going to leave things on a cliffhanger of sorts. Robert (Tristan Rogers) will decide Holly (Emma Samms) is not dead and he has to find her, Sasha (Sofia Mattson) falls deeper into drugs, and Nelle (Chloe Lanier) gives the performance of a lifetime in court, leaving us to wonder for quite a while who will get custody of Wiley.
Currently, Los Angeles County where GH is filmed is on a stay-at-home order until August, but that order will be lifted slowly and in phases, so it’s quite possible soaps and other movies and TV shows can get back in production by June or July — with modifications to make taping safe in the age of coronavirus.
For now, GH fans will be able to enjoy your favorites the way you have each May for years — with a little song and dance. Unfortunately, it’s not an original song and dance. Instead, it’s Nurses Ball classics, going back to 2014. You will get about three days of Nurses Ball each year from 2014 until last year for the next few weeks. Expect performance highlights from Wally Kurth (Ned), Maura West (Ava), and of course, the Magic Milo gang.
But rest assured, new episodes of your favorite soap WILL be back. In the meantime, enjoy Port Charles of years past. General Hospital (GH) airs weekdays on ABC. Check your local listings for airtimes.
