In 1994, General Hospital aired its first-ever Nurses’ Ball, which was hosted by Lucy as a fundraiser for HIV and AIDS awareness, and also paid tribute to all of the medical personnel who lived and worked in Port Charles. The event has run on and off over the past 26 years, but seeing the doctors and nurses sing and perform has always been a treat to the show’s fans.
With National Nurses Week running between May 6-12, and nurses doing an amazing part in helping those suffering through this COVID-19 pandemic, the folks at General Hospital are doing their part to celebrate them.
On its official Twitter feed, the show notes it wants to hear from nurses as part of the celebration. “Why did you become a nurse? Tell us why using #ABCCelebratesNurses,” it says alongside a photo from a past Nurses’ Ball featuring Bobbie, Epiphany, and Amy. “We’ll be featuring nurses every day until May 12th. Thank you for all you do. #GH.”
John J. York, who plays Mac Scorpio on the show, quickly chimed in his own support for the brave men and women nurses out there. “Yes, thank you for ALL you do,” he wrote alongside an emoji of praying hands.
Several real-life nurses have also already shared their stories in reply, including Chrissie Lapke, who goes by the Twitter handle @chrissiexoox wrote, “I decided to become a nurse after completing cancer treatment. The nurses that helped me changed my life and I wanted to pay that forward. Also, my Grandma is my hero and she was a nurse!”
Several others wrote that it would have been a great idea for the show to have honored nurses by picking a Nurses Ball episode for its classic episode they’ll be showing this Friday instead of the Thanksgiving 2018 episode that they have chosen.
General Hospital considers all nurses heroes and looks forward to hearing more people tell their stories. General Hospital (GH) airs weekdays on ABC. Check your local listings for airtimes.
