Sometimes when you’re the child of two people who are both bigger than life, you can get a little lost in the shuffle and that seems to be the case for poor Kristina on General Hospital.
Being the daughter of a Cassadine like Alexis Davis and a mob boss like Sonny Corinthos couldn’t have been easy, but it should have been fascinating.
After all, those two are like fire and ice and completely combustible. So, why has Kristina (the completely charming Lexi Ainsworth) always seemed to fall by the wayside when GH has looked to tell a compelling story?
She has long been old enough to be driving it and yet she’s been treated like an after-thought. That is, until now.
While this cult story has its fans and its detractors, it’s also given GH the opportunity to hit the reboot button on the character and finally decide what makes her tick, what’s at stake for her, and truly launch into what is driving the young woman to do the things she’s been doing, rather than flailing around from one failed relationship to another.
The results, at least what was seen on Monday’s show, certainly seem to be worth it as we learned during an intervention session with her folks and Michael (Chad Duell) that she feels a heartbreaking loneliness due to her parents’ treatment of her and that’s what left her open to being vulnerable to Dawn of Day.
It’s also given other actors, like Nancy Lee Grahn, who plays her mother Alexis and Maurice Benard, who plays her father, Sonny, a chance to shine as well.
The tears in both their eyes as they had to listen to Kristina share how they make her feel revealed the heartbreak within.
No parent wants to cause their child pain and yet it’s obvious that both have done just that. It also gave Duell a chance to prove himself as Michael tried to be the salve to his sister’s heart and give her the validation she so desperately needed from someone in her family.
Hopefully, this is just the beginning of reigniting the Kristina character, with more therapy sessions ahead — especially with sisters Molly (Haley Pullos) and Sam (Kelly Monaco). If Kristina can emerge from this experience a character with a greater purpose, we may all end up winners from it.
