General Hospital celebrated the show’s 56th anniversary on April 1, 2019 with a special episode which aired on… April 2, 2019. (This was due to pre-emptions throwing the airdate schedule off.)
Characters we get to rarely see, like Lucy (Lynne Herring), Mac (John J. York), Monica (Leslie Charleson), Bobbie (Jacklyn Zeman), Lesley (Denise Alexander), and Scott (Kin Shriner) showed up as part of the late Gail’s scavenger hunt around GH. So how did fans feel about the celebration? What over 8,000 told us:
I’m Loving It
Over 79% of the audience gave the episode a thumbs up. It was great seeing Lucy reconnect with the two loves of her life, Scott and Kevin (Jon Lindstrom) — even as one of the other loves of their lives — Laura (Genie Francis) looked on.
And it was fun to see Monica exchange barbs with Lesley over Rick (Chris Robinson), as well as share fond memories of Alan (Stuart Damon) with Lucy.
Scott recalled his relationship with Lee and Gail for Franco (Roger Howarth), and Laura talked to Sonny (Maurice Benard)…for some reason. Plus, we got that montage of flashbacks at the end. That’s how you celebrate an anniversary!
Not Enough
A single montage at the end, 21% of you are mad as hell. That’s all we got? Where were the real flashbacks, like when Mac was talking to Maxie (Kirsten Storms) about her heart transplant, or Carly (Laura Wright) remembered Morgan?
Relatively new couples like Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn) and Julian (William deVry) got airtime and an old clip — featuring Julian’s abs and Alexis’ inability to think straight at the sight of them, natch — while the show’s signature couple, Luke and Laura didn’t? Same goes for Liz (Rebecca Herbst) and current husband Franco, but nothing of her with Lucky (Jonathan Jackson).
Next time, fans want less telling and more showing. An anniversary episode should be wall to wall flashbacks!
General Hospital (GH) airs weekdays on ABC. Check your local listings for airtimes.
