General Hospital’s Constance Towers Reflects On Amazing Hollywood Career

While Constance Towers has had an impressive career in Hollywood that has spanned decades, General Hospital fans adore her for playing the deliciously wicked Helena Cassadine off and on since 1997. She recently took a look back and shared her thoughts about all she has accomplished.

The Amazing Film Life of Constance Towers

Earlier this week, the soap veteran (she also appeared on Capitol, Sunset Beach, The Young and the Restless, and Love Is a Many Splendored Thing) spoke with Classic Film & TV Café about her time in Hollywood and on Broadway and some of the iconic moments of which she’s taken part.

On working with acclaimed writer/director Sam Fuller on The Naked Kiss, Towers recalled, “I have great memories of working with Sam because he was this wonderful director who communicated with you — and sometimes shocked you. If he felt he didn’t have everyone’s attention on the set, he shot off a gun he had. The bullets were blanks, of course, but can you imagine that today?”

On working with four-time Oscar-winning director John Ford, Towers shared, “John Ford was the epitome of being a gentleman until you really got to know him and then his sense of humor came through. He was bawdy in his own way.” She had worked on his film, The Horse Soldiers with John Wayne.

The Mystery of Television
Constance Towers also did plenty of primetime television, including four appearances on Perry Mason, which was memorable for a particular reason. “I had such fun on that show. Gail Patrick was a wonderful lady, such an intelligent woman. I’d have to go back and research to be sure, but I think she was one of the first female producers of successful TV series. Raymond Burr was intelligent and such a good actor.  Working with him was a handful, though, because he was so much fun.”

Helena’s Future?

The blog asked Towers if she thought Helena may still be alive and she recounted stories of other times everyone thought Helena had died but she’d come back, along with other characters who have done the same. She also was aware that characters are always talking about her, so, “Who knows what they have in store for her?” You just never know with that character.

More For Towers
She revealed she has a new project she is working on — a documentary on the 100th birthday celebration of silver-screen legend, Rita Hayworth. “I will be taking people around the Columbia lot and talking about Rita Hayworth and her contributions to film and why she’s still one of the great film goddesses. I’ll also be talking about Columbia as I knew it back in those days. It should be fun.” General Hospital (GH) airs weekdays on ABC. Check your local listings for airtimes.
