When Steve Burton first returned to the General Hospital (GH) canvas, it felt like every episode was a Friday or it took place during sweeps. But, then things slowed down and we felt like we were watching the reassure Drew that Sam loves him as she dreams of Jason show.
Well, all it took was a few days of Drew (Billy Miller) and Sam (Kelly Monaco) on vacation somewhere for the action to heat up once again, and today it finally did. While the old Sam would have loved all this, the new Sam is better off on a tropical island with Drew and the kids, but we digress.
How many people can be shot in one day, you ask? Well, it looked like three, but it turned out to be two. It was no secret what would happen to Nathan since news leaked that Ryan Paevey is leaving the show, but who expected Faison to be shot the very same week he returned, right after he shot Nathan?
That told us Jason is back for sure cause he took his shot and could have killed Carly (Laura Wright), but of course he didn’t. (Try that one, Drew.) But, between all the gunshots and action, there were some very human moments that make a soap a soap.
Finn (Michael Easton) and Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn) had more great conversation where he admitted exactly what he wants–Anna.
And then poor Anna (the amazing Finola Hughes) remembered her younger days with a Faison just as deranged as the one we have now. With sexual abuse and assault at the top of the news almost daily, we could see how violated Anna felt then and now.
But then, there was Nathan. Could there ever be more of a good guy on a soap with such a sweet romance? Maxie and Nathan may not have had the typical angst of a soap couple, but now they do. They have always been adorable and absolutely perfect for each other, but just when their life became perfect, this tragedy struck.
We know what’s coming next week and we don’t want to see it, but of course, we won’t be able to turn away. Nathan got into that elevator Wednesday with the light shining on him and a great big smile, and got off an elevator today for a moment the audience and Maxie (Kirsten Storms) will never forget.
This is how to do soaps right. Leave our hearts pounding. Then, leave our hearts in our chest when even when we expect something, it still all feels so unexpected.
