General Hospital completely missed the boat by airing repeat episodes of Nathan’s death… and here’s exactly why.
Unless the show is planning on bringing back Ryan Paevey as Nathan, there was no need to remind fans of that horrible loss. Everyone certainly shed enough tears the first time around.
Now that GH is relaunching the whole Kevin and Ryan saga, with Jon Lindstrom playing both roles, they missed the perfect opportunity to show several episodes in a row that could show fans the terror that Ryan is capable of that a few sparse flashbacks can’t really convey.
If the show didn’t feel it had enough episodes (though it certainly does) to fill all those repeat slots, it should have scheduled a pivotal episode that showcased Kevin and Laura’s (Genie Francis) burgeoning romance.
After all, Francis is getting ready to return to the show and there could be new viewers who never saw the couple’s special spark. Then, Laura making a comeback to find Kevin acting odd, because he’s actually Ryan, would pack more punch.
Let’s face it: The Nathan episodes were just aired earlier this year. Fans can see it online if they wanted to see it that bad… if they didn’t record and save it already for themselves.
Viewers love it when shows dig a little deeper than the past year to show a repeat when the schedule warrants it.
Showing ACTUAL classoc episodes with classic Ryan and Felicia (Kristina Wagner) scenes would also clue in new viewers that Felicia is so much more than just Maxie’s mother. They have no idea her rich history with the show!
Not only that, Mac (John J. York) would also be seen strutting his best hero self! The younger Scorpio brother has a lot of history on the show, too. (As an aside, will we even get a reunion between these two before Tristan Rogers’ latest stint ends?)
Come on, GH: Next time (and sadly, we all know there will be a next time a repeat airs), give it a little more thought and show us a real treat!
General Hospital (GH) airs weekdays on ABC. Check your local listings for airtimes.
