Maurice Benard has come a long way since Sonny Corinthos managed The Paradise Lounge strip club back in 1993, and now, the General Hospital (GH) star is ready to put his life story on paper!
“People have been asking me to do this for years,” Benard tells Soap Hub. “I’ve said no in the past, but, now, with this being my 25th anniversary on GH, I think it’s time. I’ve worked hard on it. The title at this point is Nothing General About It.”
The Emmy-winning actor has always been open about his life, his career, family, and the challenges he’s faced with mental illness. But he promises the book he’s working on will contain a deeper look into his life.
“There is some stuff in there that I don’t think people would already know,” he says. “It’s everything that people do know about me [and more] — meeting my wife (Paula), being with her for 30 years.
“She’s fantastic. It’s about everything we went through, our kids, my fighting days. The writer [I’m working with] writes like it’s a great movie. I delve in pretty deep.”
In addition to tales about GH and his time on All My Children (where he played Nico), Benard says he’ll write about taking on the role of real-life actor/producer Desi Arnaz in Lucy & Desi: Before the Laughter in 1991.
“Frances [Fisher, who played Lucy] was amazing in that,” Benard recalls. “It was tough, but Frances was phenomenal. I just saw her about a year ago.”
Benard’s memoir is still being written. The actor says he and his writer have completed about 100 pages, which are currently being shopped around to potential publishers. “We’ll see what happens,” Benard says.
Soap Hub predicts there will be a bidding war to publish the Benard’s memoir!
