The doctor may be ‘out’ on General Hospital, but Matt Cohen, who left his gig as Dr. Griffin Munro this past March, is returning to television. The fan-favorite will be seen regularly, however, it won’t be as an actor!
Soap Hub has exclusively learned that Cohen has joined the Emmy Award-winning entertainment newsmagazine show Entertainment Tonight. He’ll serve as a full-time correspondent and will co-anchor ET’s weekend show.
“Matt is full of charisma and curiosity making him the perfect ET correspondent,” says Erin Johnson, executive producer, ET. “We loved working with him so much as a guest correspondent this spring and summer that we had to make him a full-time member of the ET family.”
While working for ET as a freelancer, Cohen has held a microphone up to stars including Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids), Tom Hanks (Castaway), James Corden (The Late, Late Show With James Corden), Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale), singer Robin Thicke, Lucy Liu (Why Women Kill), and Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation).
In addition to his role on GH, Matt Cohen is also known for his parts as John Winchester and the Archangel Michael on Supernatural. He has also appeared on How to Get Away with Murder, The O.C., and 90210.
The actor left GH earlier this year when Griffin’s life had fallen apart, and it seemed there was nothing left for him in Port Charles. Of course, he is Duke Lavery’s son, so he has a tie to an iconic character that could one day lead to Griffin’s return.
Cohen’s not the first ABC Daytime star to transition to on-camera reporting with ET. Cameron Mathison (ex-Ryan, All My Children) worked on the show as a host/correspondent before moving over to his current gig, Home and Family on the Hallmark Channel. Stay tuned to catch Matt Cohen on ET.
