No, Ava Jerome is no heroine on General Hospital (GH). As a matter of fact, she can be downright mean, vindictive, and more-than-a-little demented.
But, Maura West has given her a soul and at the core of that soul is motherhood. Yes, Ava did think she could control daughter Kiki’s (Hayley Erin) life at one point, and not did she sleep with her boyfriend, she caused his death in a roundabout way when she switched his bipolar meds.
But, has she done worse than others in Port Charles? Hardly. And, has she done worse than Sonny (Maurice Benard)? Again, hardly.
Sonny shot his own son (but that’s been excused because he didn’t know he was his son), he killed his adopted son’s biological father and there’s still no excuse for that, and let’s not forget he (accidentally) shot Carly (Laura Wright) in the head right before (and we mean RIGHT before) she gave birth to Morgan.
Neither Ava nor Sonny can be considered parents of the year, but the fact is they are parents–and they both love their little girl.
But, let’s think of Avery’s little life and how little time she has spent with her own mother. First, Nina (Michelle Stafford) literally ripped Avery from Ava’s womb, snapped, claimed her as her own, and kidnapped her while naming her Jaime Somers.
After that, Ava ended up in jail, ended up falling off a bridge, AND ended up with cancer and presumed dead. During none of that time did she get to be with Avery. In fact, Michael oddly won custody of her during that time and called her AJ.
The only real time Ava spent with Avery was when she won custody from Sonny and…well…never really lost it. Instead, Sonny blackmailed her into letting him have the little girl less than a year later.
And visitation? Well, they tried that until he learned what Ava did with Morgan’s pills. We can see how that angered Sonny and Carly (to put it mildly), but really, they are no better than she is, and well, she is Avery’s mother.
It’s amazing that kid is as cute and well-adjusted as she is considering all her custody shifts in her three-and-a-half years of life. But, it really is about time she knows who her real mother is because her mother does love her, and no, Carly is not her mother.
Give Ava the baby she carried, wanted, loved, and has been deprived of for most of the girl’s young life. It really is about time.
