Yesterday, several sites reported that the season 23 cast of Dancing With the Stars, announced this morning on ABC’s Good Morning America, would include fan favorite Emma Samms (ex-Holly, General Hospital).
Alas, when the cast was revealed, Samms’ name was not among the 13 celebrities. What happened?
When Rumors Get Started…
Speculation began that Samms was going to be in the show’s cast when the actress tweeted on Aug. 3: “I have some good news but I can’t tell you which is annoying. Though probably not as annoying as this tweet. Sorry.”
RealityTVWorld.com reports that DWTS host Tom Bergeron tweeted in reply: “@EmmaSamms1 You’re such a tease!”
That may have been enough to fuel the speculation. Also, Soap Hub hears from one source that Samms’ name was more than just being banded about — she was a serious contender for season 23.
[relbar link=”http://soaphub.wpengine.com/general-hospital/emme-rylan-injury-update/” text=”Emme Rylan Injury Update!”]The former daytime star, who is also known to night time fans for her runs as Fallon on Dynasty and The Colbys, and Grayson on Models, Inc. tweeted on August 25 that she was not joining the reality competition series. “Sadly, it isn’t true” Samms wrote to Canadian Guy on TV @cdnguyontv
It turns out Samms’ tweet that day wasn’t just a deflection.
She addressed the issue again today after the cast announcement was made.
So sorry to disappoint re #DWTS Not entirely sure how that rumour started! It wouldn’t have worked anyway, but perhaps next time?

Imagine the Dance
Hopefully, that will happen. Imagine Samms doing a Rhumba with Tony Dovolani or Val Chermkovskiy to “Baby, Come To Me,” the hit song that skyrocketed to the top of the charts when it was used as Luke and Holly’s love theme back in 1982. Cut to Anthony Geary (ex-Luke) in the audience and — no matter what the score — Samms would be voted into the next week of competition.
Another reason that gave credence to the likelihood that Samms would be joining the show was that soap stars have always been welcomed on the series, starting with Kelly Monaco (Sam, GH), who won the first Mirror Ball Trophy on the US version of the show.
A History of Soap Stars
Other daytime stars who’ve stepped onto the ballroom floor include All My Children’s JR Martinez (ex-Brot), who won! Also, from AMC: Susan Lucci (ex-Erica), Cameron Mathison (ex-Ryan), Aidan Turner (ex-Aiden). Other soap stars include Jack Wagner (ex-Frisco, GH; ex-Nick, The Bold and the Beautiful) and Ingo Rademacher (ex-Jax, GH); and Lisa Rinna (ex-Billie, Days of our Lives).
DWTS was due to have a soap star in its cast this season because there hasn’t been one on the show since Antonio Sabato Jr. (ex-Jagger, GH) competed in season 19 with Cheryl Burke.
[relbar link=”http://soaphub.wpengine.com/general-hospital/get-ready-fascinating-general-hospital-fall-port-charles/” text=”Get Ready for an Exciting Fall in Port Charles!”]Technically, one celeb this season has some soap cred – Maureen McCormick, best known as Marcia on The Brady Bunch, briefly played the role of Gwen’s mom Rebecca Hotchkiss on Passions.
GH airs weekdays on ABC. Share your thoughts, leave a comment in the section below. Additionally, for more General Hospital spoilers updates, recaps, and news, go to Soap Hub’s Facebook fanpage and join the conversation about all your favorite soaps!
