General Hospital is all aflutter, as Bobbie and Felicia prepare to stage a Nurses Ball to coincide with the 60th anniversary of their beloved hospital. A playing-dead Lucy is unhappy not to be part of the action. But we’ve got something different on our minds. If this is the 60th anniversary of the physical hospital, does that mean that the first episode, which aired on April 1, 1963, was the institution’s inaugural day of operation?
It sure didn’t feel that way at the time. If you watch it in its entirety (see below), you can see Nurse Jessie (Emily McLaughlin) clearly moving about the hallways as if she knows where she’s going. There was none of that reading signs and checking to make sure you’re in the right place, common on the first day at a new job site.
There are also patients who have clearly been in attendance for a while. There is a heavily bandaged woman, whom Jessie tells, “Not again!” while Steve (John Bernadino) urges her to stop whining about her damaged face and just be grateful to be alive! What a fine bedside manner. Was this obviously traumatized women and the folks behind other doors whom Steve accuses Angie of disturbing just transported here from somewhere else? Sounds medically risky!
Steve’s girlfriend, Peggy, also stomps out of the hospital in a huff when her doctor beau jilts her for a patient without needing to ask where the door is, while Phill (Roy Thinnes) finds his wife Jessie with equal ease. They also know where to go to find some privacy for their fight. And we get the feeling it’s not the first time this nook has been utilized.
What we’re trying to say is that it’s obviously nobody’s first day anywhere. And no gaslighting on GH’s part will ever convince us otherwise!
