Supercouples were once a staple on General Hospital, but they seem to have disappeared. Where have they gone, and is there any chance for a return?
Key Takeaways
- It all began with Luke and Laura.
- We had decades worth of couples fighting bad guys and falling in love.
- Spencer and Trina gave us a glimpse of a supercouple, but it didn’t last.
- There haven’t been many couples to root for.
- Joss and Vaughn could save the day and save love in the afternoon.
The Days Of The Supercouple
The rise of the supercouple began with Luke (Anthony Geary) and Laura (Genie Francis). The good girl fell in love with the guy from the wrong side of the tracks, and he took her on dangerous adventures. From Frank Smith and the mob to the Cassadines trying to freeze the world, fans rooted for the couple to conquer all and continue to fall madly in love as they did it. The whole world watched as they finally tied the knot. It was magical.
The following years brought us more couples who fought the odds and the bad guys to stay together. Frisco (Jack Wagner) and Felicia (Kristina Wagner) searched for Aztec treasure. We rooted for Robert (the late Tristan Rogers) and Holly (Emma Samms), as well as Anna (Finola Hughes) and Duke (Ian Buchanan).
The next generation brought us young love with Lucky (Jonathan Jackson) and Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst), as well as Nicholas (the late Tyler Christopher) and Emily (Natalia Livingston).
As the years went on, we had Sonny (Maurice Benard) and Brenda (Vanessa Marcil), Jason (Steve Burton) and Sam (Kelly Monaco), and of course Sonny and Carly (Laura Wright). There was always love mixed with danger and adventure.
Now What?
Not long ago, Spencer (ex-Nicholas Chavez) and Trina (Tabyana Ali) were on the verge of supercouple status, with romance and a villain in Esme (Avery Kristen Pohl). Unfortunately, Chavez left the show, so Spencer and Esme were killed off.
As it stands today, there is no supercouple or even a great couple in Port Charles. Brook Lynn (Amanda Setton) and Chase (Josh Swickard) are sweet but not particularly exciting, and it appears they may not last.
Brook Lynn’s son, on the other hand, may take on the world. Gio (Giovanni Mazza) and his girlfriend, Emma (Braedyn Bruner), are young activists fighting for animal rights. They are well on their way to battling villains, whether they realize it or not. Plus, both being from legacy families makes them a couple that fans will cheer for.
Josslyn (Eden McCoy) and Vaughn (Bryce Durfee) also have potential. Being in the WSB gives instant excitement and adventure, and they seem to care for each other. They could be this generation’s supercouple and fight the evil of Brennan (Chris McKenna). There may be hope, after all.
