Laura Collins is out to protect her grandson, Ace’s, interests above all else on General Hospital. She was there when Esme gave birth to him, she gave Esme a place to live and defended her when no one else believed she’d turned over a new leaf — and would do anything for her beloved little boy. But now, Ace’s daddy, Nikolas, has the baby, and he thinks he ought to have a crack at raising his son and has taken him. Whose side will Laura choose?
Laura (Genie Francis) was Team Esme (Avery Kristen Kohl) when she was Ace’s only parent…and the only way Laura could see her grandson. But, now that Nikolas (Adam Huss) has the child, it’s a horse of a different color. Laura supports those she loves, and she loves Nikolas. He’s an adult. Esme is a child. Nikolas has the means to give Ace whatever he needs. Esme is still depending on the kindness of others. He would make a much better guardian.
On the other hand, not only did Nik keep Esme locked up for the duration of her pregnancy, there’s also the spectacular job he did raising Spencer (Nicholas Alexander Chavez). How many times did Nik abandon Spencer to pursue his own interests? Even when he was hands-on, who remembers what a weird, snotty, and smug little brat Spencer was? Unless Laura wants another disaster on her hands, Esme still seems like the better parental option for Ace.
But, in the end, Laura will refuse to take anyone’s side — except Ace’s. A child needs both parents and a stable upbringing. That’s what Ace should have most. While Laura hovers in the background — to make sure his mom and dad don’t mess it up too badly. Which is when she will step in.
