GH Strikes Gold By Taking Lucy Coe Off The Back Burner

There are some soap characters you just don’t cast aside for years and only trot out for special events or to sell real estate to front-burner characters. Lucy Coe is one of those characters, and it looks like General Hospital has finally realized the error of its ways.

Why We Love Lucy Coe

Perhaps it was Lucy (Lynn Herring) who summed up why we love her best when she listed her litany of accomplishments and mishaps to Anna Devane (Finola Hughes). Yes, she’s been thrust on stage and hung upside down in her underwear numerous times, but it was always for a good cause. And yes, she made that ginormous red hat work when she married Alan Quartermaine (Stuart Damon). In fact, she might have worn one of the most memorable bridal headpieces in soap opera history.

However, never forget that Lucy also slayed vampires, so when she told Anna she could handle a man like Victor Cassadine (Charles Shaughnessy), she meant it — even if she wasn’t correct, for the time being, at least. With Victor, the old and daring Lucy has come out to play, and we can tell she has never been happier.

GH Can’t Hide Lucy Again

We thought we were lucky late last year when Lucy seemed to find love again with Martin Grey (Michael E. Knight), but assumed both characters would remain without a storyline. Never have we been more thrilled to be so wrong. No, we haven’t seen Knight’s brilliance as southern fried (Tad) Martin as much as we would have liked, but we got Lucy center stage once more and not just on the Nurse’s Ball stage in her underwear.

Watching Herring and Hughes spar has been a sheer joy, filled with intelligent banter and coming from two sophisticated and mature women who show us they still have it at any age. Hiding Lucy behind the curtain once again would be a crime, and we hope that GH finally remembers what it has when it showcases its vets.
