The year 2022 seems to be a time when General Hospital has been trying to make pairings happen out of thin air that just do not work and Carly Corinthos and Drew Cain seem to be the latest victim of this contrived couples trend.
Sadly, Carly (Laura Wright) and Drew (Cameron Mathison) seem to be joining the likes of Elizabeth Webber (Rebecca Herbst) and Hamilton Finn (Michael Easton), Maxie Jones (Kirsten Storms) and Austin Gatlin-Holt (Roger Howarth), and Britt Westbourne (Kelly Thiebaud) and Cody Bell (Josh Kelly). However, there is something more egregious about Carly and Drew than those other forced pairings — the re-writing of story history.
When we last saw Drew Cain as played by Billy Miller, he wanted nothing to do with Carly and Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) — especially after they dropped him like a hot potato when the real Jason Morgan returned, and he was revealed to be Jason’s twin.
We also understand that the current iteration of Carly and Drew was never supposed to happen because all of Carly’s Jason dreams were about to come true until Steve Burton chose not to be vaccinated against COVID-19 and was let go from the soap. Jason was presumed dead, and Drew was moved into Carly’s life as a replacement Jason. That makes them seem beyond forced, but it’s gotten much worse since we first realized this was the GH plan.
Carly and Drew’s blossoming friendship and romance never seemed organic for a variety of reasons, as mentioned above, but having him follow Carly to Florida so we could revisit her teenage mistakes once again just made everything worse. For weeks, we watched Carly and Drew exist on an island of their own and wondered what happened to Drew.
When he first returned to Port Charles a year ago, he was determined to bring down Victor Cassadine (Charles Shaughnessy), the man who kept him hostage for two years. He was also determined to forge a relationship with his young daughter, Scout Cain, who he claims kept him going while he was in a Grecian prison. Instead, all we have now is a Drew who is so obsessed with everything Carly that he’s dropped all his own goals so he can fawn over a woman who was not the friend he now claims she was his first time around in PC.
Instead of a romance that happened naturally, every line of dialogue this unpopular pair uttered with their ocean background was contrived and, frankly, untrue. No, Carly did not leave Jacksonville in her 20s in search of a better life. She left to find her birth mom and get revenge on her for giving her up for adoption.
No, Drew does not remember joining the military right out of high school in search of his own new life and finding a family with his Navy buddies. He doesn’t remember this because he has no memory of his life prior to 2014 and only has Jason’s memories from 1995 till 2012. And no, Carly was not the person who kept him going while Victor imprisoned him for two years.
You can’t create a “supercouple” out of nothing but lies, with the pair lying to one another and the script lying to the audience. We remember everything that happened between Carly and Drew before last year — even if they pretend they do not.
