Let’s be honest: Cody Bell isn’t working on General Hospital. We’re not sure what he wants. We’re not sure who he wants. And nobody wants him to be Mac’s son — including Cody. But this isn’t Josh Kelly’s fault. He’s doing the best he can with the material he was given. He was just the wrong character at the wrong time in the wrong place. Here are three people it would have made more sense for him to have played.
Laura (Genie Francis) got two new long-lost brothers since she became mayor. But there is another brother who could have come to town, who is somewhat in Kelly’s age range. The last time Rick Webber (Chris Robinson) appeared in Port Charles, it was so Laura could remember having caught him with a girlfriend, having killed the girlfriend, then killing Rick before going catatonic for a decade.
But those who watched GH in the 20th century remember that Laura actually considered Rick her father and that she loved him. We also know that Laura never met Rick’s son, Rick Jr., the baby he had with Ginny (Judith Chapman). Maybe Laura would have liked that brother rather than the ones she got?
In between playing Luke, Anthony Geary was Luke’s cousin, Bill. And Bill had a son, Sly. Sly would be the perfect character to bring back — and for Kelly to have played. Sly is related enough to General Hospital to not be a character out of nowhere. Like, oh, say, Cody. But he is also barely biologically related to anyone so that his romantic canvas would have been wide open.
And then, of course, there is Lucky. His mother is in town. His ex-wife is in town. His ex-girlfriend is in town. And, most importantly, his son Aiden, and Cam and Jake — the boys he considered his sons — are in town. Lucky is needed in Port Charles. And Josh Kelly could have been a good one. And more welcome, as a result.
