Soap operas like General Hospital can go on for years. Decades. Start in one century and end in another. No one is suggesting that, when Frank and Doris Hursley began writing GH in 1963, they had story planned out through the 60th anniversary in 2023. Neither did Gloria Monty when she took over and reigned supreme in the 1980s.
But we were kind of hoping that the folks who are writing the show now, actually have some idea of where they expect it to go as it is actually unfolding. That doesn’t seem to be the case, though.
Soon after mysterious cousin Mason (Nathanyael Grey) first began pressuring Austin (Roger Howarth) and blackmailing Ava (Maura West) by using her mother and her daughter, his even more mysterious mob boss was repeatedly referred to as “she.”
This, naturally, led viewers to speculate that the woman on top was Anna’s (Finola Hughes) vengeful sister, Alex (also Finola Hughes). Or maybe it was Cassandra (Jessica Tuck) who, back in 2017, was blackmailing Valentin (James Patrick Stuart) and in cahoots with Nikolas. It made sense. Both women made sense.
But then, with no warning, or even a reference to a recent change in management, the Big Bad became a “he.” So forget about Alex. Forget about Cassandra. Forget even about dark horse candidates Selina (Lydia Look) and Olivia Jerome (Tonja Walker) and Helena (Constance Towers) and Tracy (Jane Elliot). Mason’s boss is now a man. And, suddenly, guessing just isn’t as much fun anymore.
Maybe it’s Cyrus (Jeff Kober)? Maybe it’s Lorenzo Alcazar (Ted King). Maybe it’s one of the many mooks Sonny is always meeting with and growling at. In any case, the story has become a lot duller. But no more compelling. And all by changing a single word.
