A Critic’s Review Of General Hospital: Tying Up Loose Ends and Murder

The author’s opinions on GH are his and his alone. They’re suitably scathing, fairly humorous, and normally bang on target.

When it comes to General Hospital, every fan has their own opinion – and Soap Hub is no different. For five days, we sat and watched the good, the bad, and everything in between, and now we offer you a handy review, and a cheeky critique, of the GH week that was.

General Hospital: The Critic’s POV

Okay, okay, I certainly didn’t have Austin (Roger Howarth) attempting to straight-up snuff out Mason (Nathanyael Grey) on my Bingo card. If only he’d thought to do that sooner.

I also appreciate the interim writers tying up the loose end that was TJ’s (Tajh Bellow) long-ago kidnapping by (retroactively) making Mason his primary abductor. I love it when plot points actually make sense, much like Tracy (Jane Elliot) revealing to Lois (Rena Sofer) that she plans to offload Deception onto Brook Lynn (Amanda Setton).

I spent weeks scratching my head wondering exactly why Ms. Quartermaine was so gung-ho to wrestle control of the company away from Lucy — especially once she got her hands on her real prize AKA Lucy’s 1% stake in ELQ (another genius swerve by the soap’s new stewards) — but I’ll be darned if it hasn’t been pleasingly tied up with a nice little bow.

Further GH Musings

* At what point does Selena Wu (Lydia Look) stop being nice and start getting real? It’s time for her to step up, show out, and put Sonny (Maurice Benard) on notice. This is her city now!

* If there’s one storyline that I want to see resolved by year’s end, it’s Cody’s (Josh Kelly) parentage. At this late date, it’s become painful to watch him mope and decry himself as “not good enough” to be Mac’s (John J. York) son as if Mac doesn’t have a past of which he is not proud.

Equally galling is what is passing for a storyline where Felicia (Kristina Wagner) is concerned. I know I’ve frequently urged TPTB to refocus General Hospital by returning to its medicine-based roots, but does anyone really want to see an ex-adventuress traipse the pitfalls of being a patient advocate — especially if we’re not going to see her, you know, interacting with patients?

* I’m beginning to smell a whodunit, what with Cyrus (Jeff Kober) making the rounds and the threats against him mounting. Granted it would be a shame to lose magnetic Daytime Emmy-winning Kober, but it’d make for one Hell of a November Sweeps — and what a laundry list of suspects. Portia (Brook Kerr), Curtis (Donnell Turner), Trina (Tabyana Ali), Austin, Laura (Genie Francis), Ava (Maura West), etc., etc.

* Michael’s (Chad Duell) blackmailing of Nina (Cynthia Watros) really irks, but I appreciate the writers taking the road less traveled. I’ve been very vocal about dreading the inevitable public crucifying of Nina, so anything that staves that off is most welcome.
