When it comes to General Hospital, every fan has their own opinion – and Soap Hub is no different. For five days, we sat and watched the good, the bad, and everything in between, and now we offer you a handy review, and a cheeky critique, of the GH week that was.
General Hospital: The Critic’s POV
This is no slight against Maurice Benard, but I’ve just never been able to get behind General Hospital‘s obsession with “Good Guy Mobster” Sonny Corinthos, so this week has been especially galling to see practically all and sundry run themselves ragged voicing Sonny’s virtuous nature and/or railing at the justice system for actually imprisoning an unapologetic criminal.
You have former police commissioners actively trying to suss out who could have possibly ratted Sonny out for his smuggling, and Dante (Dominic Zamprogna), whom Sonny shot point blank in the chest, whining that his daddy might actually have to face justice for his crimes.
Only in Port Charles do people get up in arms when actual lawbreakers are held to account. [Just look at those of you who gripe about Nina (Cynthia Watros) wanting Carly (Laura Wright) to be held accountable for her insider trading. Carly’s the one who broke the law, the actual law — unlike Nina who just did something reprehensible in not alerting Sonny’s family to his location or status as an amnesiac — but it’s Nina who’s the devil incarnate. I mean, it’s a choice to think that way, because, the truth is, they are both just…just terrible.]
But this is what happens when you structure your show around a character who, on any other soap opera, would been painted as a villain rather than one of the soap’s most moralistic characters.
Further GH Musings
* Not only is Portia (Brook Kerr) just the worst on a matter of principle, but now she’s gone and made Anna (Finola Hughes) cry. Burn her at the stake I say! [And for everyone who struggles to detect sarcasm…sarcasm.]
* Praise be, we finally have some real forward momentum where Sasha’s (Sofia Mattsson) interminable torture porn storyline is concerned. Let’s keep it up!
