A Critic’s Review Of General Hospital: Highs And Lows For Thanksgiving

When it comes to General Hospital, every fan has their own opinion – and Soap Hub is no different. For five days, we sat and watched the good, the bad, and everything in between, and now we offer you a handy review, and a cheeky critique, of the GH week that was.

General Hospital: The Critic’s POV

While I’m not convinced that that was the intent, Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn) perfectly summed up General Hospital‘s 2023 with her rousing Thanksgiving Day speech. It has indeed been, “quite a year, a seesaw,” punctuated by “exhilarating highs and excruciating lows.” In fact, that was this week to a tee.

Ellen Travolta returned as Mama Cerullo, and it’s clear she’s harboring a secret or three (High). Leslie Charleson’s/Monica’s glaring absence — What? Not even a phone call? (Low). Valentin (James Patrick Stuart) finally getting Anna (Finola Hughes) after all these years when he relayed to Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst), “I’m beginning to believe that [she] doesn’t like anyone to think she’s wrong.” (Hilarious High). Drew (Cameron Mathison) continuing to whine about someone turning him in for breaking the law (Annoying Low).

Yet more contrived drama to prolong Nina’s (Cynthia Watros) inevitable dragging (PAINFULLY Low). Spencer (Nicholas Alexander Chavez) (supposedly) learning the error of his ways (High…if you’re a fan of “Sprina”). The missed opportunity that was picking up from Friday’s stunning cliffhanger? Well, that’s less of a low and more out-and-out disrespect for the character of Austin, performer Roger Howarth, and an indication of exactly how much the actor and his alter-ego were prioritized. Hey, maybe Chris and Dan/Dan and Chris are back at it.

Further GH Musings

* I get it, ABC.com, I get it. You have Kelly’s [diner] mugs for sale. They don’t have to be the actual stars of the scene in which they’re featured.

* On the one hand, good for Sasha (Sofia Mattsson) for refusing Sonny’s (Maurice Benard) handout. On the other, she should have sought for Gladys’s (Bonnie Burroughs) blood. It still irks me that the villainess walked away practically scot-free.

* So NOW Jordan (Tanisha Harper) is amenable to bending the rules, but not BEFORE she lost her marriage?
