A Critic’s Review Of General Hospital: Freaks, Geeks & A Welcome Arrival

When it comes to General Hospital, every fan has their own opinion – and Soap Hub is no different. For five days, we sat and watched the good, the bad, and everything in between, and now we offer you a handy review, and a cheeky critique, of the GH week that was.

General Hospital: The Critic’s POV

Thank God for Jane Elliot and Tracy Angelica Quartermaine. Between her complete disregard for Carly (Laura Wright) — how I loved her forgoing inquiring as to Carly’s presence to Carly herself but rather turning her back on “AJ’s biggest mistake” and asking her family at large — and her withering commentary — both verbal and visual –on a wide variety of topics, I was actually able to stomach Michael (Chad Duell) and Willow’s (Katelyn MacMullen) saccharin wedding and all the prep that preceded it. But just barely.

[Also, I’ll never tire of the reminder that the house is Monica’s (Leslie Charleson) because Alan gave it to her.]

I couldn’t help but blanche at Bobbie’s (Jacklyn Zeman) observation-cum-threat that Willow was “One of us now,” — “them” being a Spencer woman…apparently. Shades of FREAKS [1932] much? And despite what Chris and Dan/Dan and Chris might want you to believe, Luke Spencer wouldn’t have given two you know what’s about Willow.

As for Carly being the one conscripted into walking down the aisle…I just can’t. That was about as galling as having Sam McCall (Kelly Monaco) officiate the whole shindig or Chase (Josh Swickard) serving as usher at the wedding for his ex and the man she cheated on him with. Talk about a facepalm moment. Where’s Chase’s self-respect?

All that said, I did delight in the delicious awkwardness that was Sonny (Maurice Benard) attending and Michael (Chad Duell) being forced to place nice. If anything, that felt too real.

What defied all logic was how resplendent the bride looked in spite of her Stage IV Leukemia. Weren’t we assured that she was knock, knock, knocking on Heaven’s door months ago?

Further GH Musings

* Don’t ever expect to see the Nina/Carly feud graduate to the pantheon of great soap opera rivalries. A Rachel/Iris, Dorian/Vikki, or Katherine/Jill they are not. What they are, is tired and overplayed, and this latest escalation that is Nina (Cynthia Watros) turning Carly into the SEC will do little more than serve as an excuse for perpetuating a most boring cycle that will see Nina damned and Carly escaping unscathed. Lather, rinse, repeat.

* Forget Jordan’s (Tanisha Harper) consternation at being left out of the loop — has anybody told Taggert (Réal Andrews) about Trina (Tabyana Ali) being at the mercy of an unhinged eco-terrorist?

* I have to say, I actually appreciate the contrariety between this Cassadine caper and the one from 40-odd years ago. Whereas Luke and Laura (Genie Francis) and Robert (Tristan Rogers) frolicked and foraged and traipsed across a tropical island, the heroic quartet of Laura, Drew (Cameron Mathison), Curtis (Donnell Turner), and Valentin (James Patrick) now traverse a frozen tundra. While megalomaniac Mikkos was all about the millions to be had holding the world to ransom, Victor (Charles Shaughnessy) wants to reset the balance of nature.

* Is it just me, or has General Hospital really rather stuck a fork in Robert and Diane’s (Carolyn Hennesey) romance?
