Classic Episode Fridays Take Over Three Daytime Soaps

In an effort to prolong their original stockpile of shows, three daytime soaps — The Young and the Restless, The Bold and the Beautiful, and General Hospital — air classic episodes from their respective vaults on Friday, taking the social media phrase “Flashback Friday” to heart.

Soaps Look Back To Move Forward

Days of our Lives has an ample supply of episodes as it tapes so far ahead. Here’s a look at what the other three serials offered up for their viewers on this past first Friday in this new way of doing business.

Victor And Nikki’s Wedding

YR showed the marriage of Victor (Eric Braeden) and Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott) from 1984. The gala was a throwback to when soaps pulled out all the stops for weddings. There were guest stars galore including Jaime Lyn Bauer as Lorie, Victoria Mallory as Leslie, and Meg Bennett as Julia. And wasn’t it great seeing favorites like Jeanne Cooper (Katherine) and Jerry Douglas (John) again, too?

As soaps don’t use popular songs as much due to budget, a particular highlight of the episode was Gina’s (Patty Weaver) rendition of Victor and Nikki’s love theme, Through the Eyes of Love. Tension built throughout the episode as a disguised Eve (Margaret Mason) attempted to carry out her plan to make the happiest day of Nikki’s life a tragic one!

A BOLD Move

BB aired its 30th-anniversary episode, which was originally broadcast March 23, 2017. Liam (Scott Clifton) and Steffy (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) were already married and it was Brooke (Katherine Kelly Lang) and Ridge’s (Thorsten Kaye) turn next.

Set in Australia, it was fun watching the action shift back to Los Angeles and seeing the Spectra 2.0 gang once more headed up by Shirley (Patrika Darbo). The highlight was a series of clips shown from the show’s 30-year run featuring Eric, Brooke, Ridge, and the late Stephanie (Susan Flannery).

It Started Out In Port Charles Town

Like BB, GH didn’t go too far back into the vault for its episode. ABC aired the show’s 56th-anniversary episode from last year in which numerous characters gathered together at the bequest of the late Dr. Gail Baldwin (the late Susan Brown).

She asked her longtime friends and others to go on a scavenger hunt throughout the hospital to find a series of envelopes. Highlights of the episode include Scotty (Kin Shriner) telling Laura if Gail hadn’t brought him back to town, he’d never have met and married her.

Laura also had some nice bonding time with her mother Lesley (Denise Alexander), and Gail smartly paired Lesley with Monica, hoping the two women would iron out their past conflicts. The two can peacefully co-exist, but Lesley couldn’t resist calling her former rival a “slut!”

At the end of the episode, Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn) read a letter for Gail thanking everyone for the times they had together and to cheer them as they continued their work at the hospital. As with BB, GH ended its episode with a series of classic flashbacks including Laura and Scotty admiring the star on the Webber family Christmas tree and Lesley slapping Monica, among many other moments.

What did you think of these blasts from soaps past? Would you prefer to see episodes from the 1980s, 1990s, or more recent shows? Sound off in the comments below!
