It’s always fascinating to watch fans’ feelings about Ava on General Hospital. You either love her, hate her, or love to hate her. Some call her a heartless criminal with no redeeming qualities, others see while she is a criminal and does absolutely awful things, she is still human. Still, others just adore her and feel she’s just misunderstood.
Soap Hub is somewhere in the middle of the second two. We adore her because she is a fascinating character brought to life by a flawless actress, acknowledge she has done some pretty horrific things, but also feel she’s misunderstood.
But, did anything she do make her deserve to lose a child? Does anything anyone does make them deserve to lose a child?
Soap Hub posed just this question, and when it comes to Ava (Maura West) losing a child, GH fans are basically split right down the middle.
With nearly 14,000 votes cast over two days, 50.6% of you truly feels for Ava and can’t imagine anyone who can show true human emotional deserving to lose a child. Unlike the sociopathic serial killer she’s convinced herself she’s in love with, it’s clear to you Ava is filled with conflict, guilt, and some deeply human feelings.
All you have to do is watch how she grieves, remember her reaction when she saw Kiki’s lifeless body, and feel her frantic need to bring her daughter’s killer to justice.
You’ve also seen her try to do better, but always somehow fail because pre-conceived notions from everyone around you due to past deeds can certainly defeat a person’s efforts to improve their life.
And then, there is another 49.4% of you who think Ava got exactly what she deserved when Kiki died. After all, look what she’s done to the people around her. Look what she even did to Kiki right in a courtroom out of pure anger and revenge. Yes, what she did was typical Ava. Acting, not thinking, and then regret, but it was still pretty horrible.
Perhaps if Ava acknowledges her criminality as Sonny and Carly do theirs, you’d like her better and not wish horrible things on her.
Soap Hub also loves the Corinthos Clan, but we also see them for who they are. A crime family and a couple that have done some pretty horrible, torturous, and yes, murderous thing to others. But, they entertain us, and no, we do not feel we they deserved to lose their child.
In the end, we love fascinating characters, especially the ones that cause fans to split into two camps of love ’em or hate ’em. It shows the passion the audience feels for soaps — and in the end those polarizing characters are the most memorable.
