Cyrus Renault has been arrested and is in the hospital recovering from a gunshot wound. Is it the end of the road for the Port Charles crime lord? Please, General Hospital, say it isn’t so.
It’s been years since the soap has had a villain as lethal and menacing on the canvas – hello, Cesar Faison – so the thought of losing Cyrus and the masterful actor who portrays him, Jeff Kober, is simply unfathomable.
Surely, there are ways to keep the complex character front and center in the storyline before he gets his comeuppance and is written off the soap for good. Here are three ways to save Cyrus and keep Jeff Kober on General Hospital.
Cyrus has wreaked havoc from behind prison walls before. How about letting him do it again? He’d be more bitter and vindictive than before, determined to destroy the lives of the people who collaborated to put him behind bars.
In addition, there could be a prominent plot actually played out at Pentonville Penitentiary. After all, there are few other Port Charles citizens currently serving time there — Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn), Shawn (Sean Blakemore), and Ryan Chamberlain (Jon Lindstrom). The characters are already in place to tell a complicated tale. And how wonderful would it be to see Cyrus match wits with Alexis?
Perhaps a crafty high-powered attorney could find a legal loophole to set Cyrus free, much to the outrage of the town’s citizens and law enforcement. Feeling victorious and invincible, Cyrus could throw caution to the wind in his efforts to bring down the Corinthos family and exact revenge upon Laura (Genie Francis), Jordan (Briana Nicole Henry), Brando (Johnny Wactor), and the pregnant Sasha (Sofia Mattsson).
It would also set up a head-to-head with Jason (Steve Burton) for control of the five families, and, down the road, an ultimate showdown with Sonny (Maurice Benard) once he remembers his true identity. Viewers have been waiting for that moment, and it can only happen if Cyrus remains a free man for a few more months.
GH has long been a soap obsessed with twins. Think Jason and Drew, Anna and Alex, Ryan and Kevin; not to mention lookalike characters like Roger Howarth’s Todd, Franco and Austin, and Michael Easton’s John, Silas, and Finn. Why not add another double to the list?
Cyrus could have been a twin whose brother was given away at birth. When that twin reads reports about Cyrus’s incarceration in the newspaper, he arrives in town to meet the man who looks exactly like him. Once DNA tests prove they’re siblings, he could be persuaded to take over Cyrus’s mob post.
Or, even better, Cyrus and his prison minions could arrange for him and his twin to change places, freeing Cyrus to do his evil bidding under his brother’s name. General Hospital (GH) airs weekdays on ABC. Check your local listings for airtimes.
